The first Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse poster has offered Marvel fans their first look at Spider-Punk and Scarlet Spider.
Sony has debuted the first poster for Across the Spider-Verse, showing Miles Morales hanging upside down in a battle-damaged suit with an endless crowd of Spider-People behind him. While the Spider-People at the forefront are characters that were introduced in 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse or featured in the recent trailer for the film, the poster does debut two variants that have yet to appear in any official marketing for Across the Spider-Verse — Scarlet Spider and Spider-Punk. Scarlet Spider can be spotted just to the left of Spider-Man 2099 while Spider-Punk is directly behind Spider-Gwen.
Who Is Scarlet Spider?
Created by Gerry Conway, Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider first appeared in 1975’s The Amazing Spider-Man #149 as a clone of Peter Parker before returning as a prominent character in the 1990s “Clone Saga” storyline. During this popular, yet controversial storyline, Reilly adopted the Scarlet Spider alias, with a costume consisting of a red spandex bodysuit and mask and a blue sleeveless hoodie sweatshirt adorned with a large spider symbol on both sides. Based on the partially obscured image of Scarlet Spider shown in the poster, it looks like the Across the Spider-Verse version of the character will be wearing a comics-faithful costume.
Spider-Punk, on the other hand, is a newer addition to Marvel Comics lore, debuting in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man #10. Created by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel, Hobart Brown/Spider-Punk is the Spider-Man of the punk rock-themed Earth-138, who gained his powers after being bitten by a spider that was irradiated as part of President Norman Osborn’s toxic waste dumping. While a voice actor for Scarlet Spider has not been announced at this time, Black Panther‘s Daniel Kaluuya will voice Spider-Punk in Across the Spider-Verse.
A Whole Multiverse of Spider-People
Joining Scarlet Spider and Spider-Punk in Across the Spider-Verse‘s multiverse shenanigans will be Spider-Cop, Spider-Man Unlimited, Spider-Man India, Takuya Yamashiro (a.k.a. the Japanese Spider-Man), Spider-Woman, Peter B. Parker/Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099, with the latter three voiced by Issa Rae, Jake Johnson and Oscar Isaac, respectively. Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld) will also be back for Across the Spider-Verse, once again tasked with helping Miles Morales/Spider-Man (Shameik Moore) save the titular Spider-Verse.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was directed by the trio of Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson. They worked off a script by Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Dave Callaham. Lord and Miller also serve as producers alongside Avi Arad, Amy Pascal and Christina Steinberg. The film swings into theaters on June 2, 2023.
