A fan on Reddit appears to have discovered that Avengers: Endgame and Toy Story 4 have a similar ending.
Avengers: Endgame had some theaters crying real tears by the end of its runtime. One clever poster on Reddit noticed that it wasn’t the only film under the Disney umbrella to garner that emotional response from viewers. Toy Story 4 also released this year to tie Woody’s adventure up in a nice bow. But, even more interestingly, the staging of the closing moments mirror each other in ways you might not expect. Both films feature a main character saying goodbye to their closest friends. Then, handing down a great responsibility to a figure in their lives. Then, going to enjoy another life with a different purpose than the one that they have carried with them for their individual narrative arcs. It’s absolutely striking and gut-wrenching to see the two put right next to each other and see how close the beats are.

Obviously, you can point out the similarities between Woody and Captain America saying goodbye to their respective friends, handling the mantle over to their successor, and finally being with the love of their life. It’s interesting to see how two different plots and legacy franchises could come to the same central ending. While the path may have been different, Avengers: Endgame and Toy Story 4 share the same destination.
For now, Toy Story 4 seems to be final film in the franchise but we wouldn’t be surprised if Woody and the gang returned in a sequel a decade from now! As for Captain America, he’s retired from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we’ll be seeing Falcon take on the mantle of the patriotic hero.
