If you’re one of the fans that have been waiting for that third Bill & Ted movie, then 2019 may be the year where you get one of the best Christmas presents ever!

While a third Bill & Ted movie has been in development for years, Steven Soderbergh, the film’s executive producer, confirmed that the long-awaited sequel Bill & Ted: Face the Music is hilarious and could be released around the end of the year.

It’s been 30 years since the world was introduced to Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, a time traveling stoner comedy starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter as the titular duo. The film was popular enough to spawn a second film, Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey in 1991, and talk of a third film has been long-running, obviously.

The film is being directed by Galaxy Quest‘s Dean Parisot with a script from original Bill & Ted writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, who told Soderbergh their ideas for the film while working together on the film project Mosaic. Soderbergh described the film as a passion project for everyone involved. “Nobody’s being paid,” he joked while promoting his new film High Flying Bird.

At the moment, what’s known about the film’s plot is that it picks up with Bill and Ted entrapped in the daily life of middle-aged family men. The fame and fortune of rock star life has yet to hit their band, Wyld Stallyns. This ongoing lack of success manages to create a tear in time, which then sends the pair off on an all new time-traveling adventure to set things right once more in the universe.

Although the last time we saw Wyld Stallyns perform in San Dimas, California was in 1991, Reeves and Winter returned to voice the characters in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures animated series, although they did not return for the second season of that cartoon or for the live-action Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventures TV series.

Bill & Ted: Face the Music may be (or not) in theaters this Christmas.
