Harley Quinn and Heath Ledger's Joker
Harley Quinn and Heath Ledger's Joker

While the Joker will be sitting out Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), the director did speak about the legendary Batman villain and championed Heath Ledger’s Dark Knight Joker as the ‘perfect’ match for Margot Robbie’s Harley.

In an interview with Jake’s Takes, Yan and the cast discussed whether any of the previous Jokers could have a healthy relationship with Robbie’s Harley. Yan pushed for Ledger’s Joker and said, “It was such an intelligent take on the character that I feel like, and Margot’s Harley is so so smart behind all the crazy, that I would be very curious, like, the battle of wits on that one.” Robbie also agreed with the director and gushed, “That would’ve been truly, truly, truly incredible.”

This is not the first time the conversation regarding which theatrical Joker is best for Harley has come up. Following the runaway success of Todd Phillips’ Joker, Robbie revealed that she is skeptical of a crossover between her Harley and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

David Ayer’s Suicide Squad introduced fans to Robbie’s Harley and cast Jared Leto as the DC Extended Universe’s Clown Prince of Crime. However, Leto’s performance was criticized by fans and critics alike, leading to his exclusion from Birds of Prey and the upcoming The Suicide Squad.

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor, Ella Jay Basco, Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, Francois Chau, Charlene Amoia, Chris Messina and Matthew Willig.
