New set photos from Black Widow reveal that William Hurt will appear as Thunderbolt Ross, and it may be to set up the Thunderbolts.
JustJared shared the set photos, which show Hurt seemingly shooting a scene. The shoot is believed to be additional photography for the film, though it’s not known whether that makes Hurt a new addition or whether he secretly filmed previously. Scarlet Johansson doesn’t appear in the photos, and it’s not clear what the scene in question involves.
Ross was last seen at the funeral of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame. However, it has long been known that Black Widow will take place shortly after Captain America: Civil War, which saw Hurt return to the MCU after last appearing in The Incredible Hulk.
The idea that Black Widow could set up the Thunderbolts is one that many have considered before, but Ross’ now confirmed involvement in the movie makes it a more realistic possibility. The MCU has already introduced a few characters who could be part of Ross’ initial lineup with Helmut Zemo (Daniel Brühl) and Ghost (Hannah John Kamen). Meanwhile, it is possible that Yelena, Red Guardian, and Taskmaster could all be people of interest for Ross. And based on Ross’ aged look, him recruiting any of them could be happening in the present 2023 setting of the MCU, instead of the past setting the rest of the film has.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle and Rachel Weisz. The film arrives in theaters on May 1, 2020.
