New fan art imagines what Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man could look like in Into the Spider-Verse 2. After plans for a fourth installment in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man movie series fell apart, Sony opted to reboot the franchise and cast Garfield as Peter Parker for The Amazing Spider-Man. The studio hoped this version could be a springboard for a larger, interconnected universe of Spider-Man films and had ambitious plans for spinoffs and sequels. Unfortunately, after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 received mixed reviews and underwhelmed at the box office, Sony scrapped those plans and cut a deal with Disney to allow Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As a result, Garfield’s Spider-Man tenure lasted only two movies, but he still made an impression with viewers. In particular, fans enjoyed the chemistry he had with Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy and his portrayal as a confident, quippy web-swinger. Obviously, Garfield isn’t going to play the role in live-action again, but he could have come back in animated form for an Into the Spider-Verse cameo that would have united him with Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. With Into the Spider-Verse 2 now being worked on, fans are hopeful the idea to bring the Spider-Men together sees the light of day, and artwork imagines what Garfield’s iteration would look like in the sequel.
Artist Camille Vialet has already shared pictures of an older Miles Morales and Maguire’s Spider-Man in Into the Spider-Verse 2. Now, Garfield’s Peter Parker gets his moment to shine. Take a look at the illustration in the space below:
The Garfield artwork follows Vialet’s established template of perfectly capturing the actor’s likeness and faithfully replicating his distinct Spider-Man costume, rendering it through Into the Spider-Verse’s animation style. It will be interesting if this is something audiences actually get to see in Into the Spider-Verse 2 or not. There’s no denying it would be a lot of fun to see the various cinematic Spider-Men share the screen (if only for a brief moment), paying tribute to the property’s extensive film history. That could be a standout moment in the sequel, though it’s something the filmmakers would likely save as a surprise for opening weekend. It’s already been teased Into the Spider-Verse 2 has big surprises in store, and this would be one of them.
With Maguire and now Garfield getting this treatment, it wouldn’t be a shock if Holland’s Spider-Man was next in Vialet’s series. If Into the Spider-Verse 2 decided to bring other big screen Spider-Men together, the scene wouldn’t be complete without Holland’s current version crossing paths with his predecessors. Perhaps the filmmaking team could even think outside the film medium and incorporate even more versions like the Peter and Miles from the Spider-Man PlayStation 4 game or other iterations. Regardless, it would be nice if Into the Spider-Verse found a spot for the movie Spider-Men at least, giving Maguire and Garfield a chance to say goodbye on a much higher note than before.
