While he’s best known for playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to playing a superhero. However, one role the actor almost landed was that of X-Men member Gambit in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
In an interview with Variety, Hemsworth spoke about the lost role in his career. “I got very close to Gambit in the Wolverine ‘X-Men’ movies. At the time I was upset. I was running out of money. But if I played either of those characters, I wouldn’t have been able to play Thor.”

Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch ended up playing Gambit in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while Channing Tatum was tapped to play Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. Ironically, Tatum tried for years to succeed Kitsch as Gambit in a standalone X-Men spinoff, but after going through numerous directors and being continually delayed, Disney, which now has 21st Century Fox under its roof, officially shelved Gambit earlier this month.
Chris Hemsworth currently appears as Thor in Avengers: Endgame.
The film is in theaters now.
