Coming 2 America has lined up a stellar cast, exceeding the talent on display in the original 1988 Coming to America with a ton of names new to the franchise that now includes Tracy Morgan.

The sequel initially began as little more than a series of questions and rumors back in March of 2017, but as time went by, fans received word that the sequel was indeed happening. Ever since the official announcement was made, Murphy has seemingly taken every precaution to maintain the integrity of the original film – bringing back many of its original stars and working to write a script that connected the events (or at least some of the events) of the original film with the sequel.

It was announced earlier in the summer that Wesley Snipes has also joined the comedy as a new character. He will be joined by other newcomers Lesley Jones and Kiki Layne. The Tracy Morgan character will have ties to Prince Akeem’s son, while Wesley Snipes is said to be playing the ruler of a neighboring nation that is in competition with Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem named General Izzi.

The production’s gone through a delay or two with Paramount initially intending to release the film just under a year from now — the release has since been pushed back to December 2020. After Hustle & Flow filmmaker Craig Brewer boarded the project, Murphy released a statement officially announcing involvement in the sequel.

“After many years of anticipation, I’m thrilled that Coming to America 2 is officially moving forward,” Murphy said in a statement last year. “We’ve assembled a great team that will be led by Craig Brewer, who just did an amazing job on Dolemite, and I’m looking forward to bringing all these classic and beloved characters back to the big screen.”

Coming 2 America is expected to land in theaters on December 18, 2020.
