Ryan Reynolds claims Deadpool 3 is in pre-production. But as we already know, the Disney/Fox merger remains the “the elephant in the room”. Subsequently, making fan’s hearts race after hearing Reynolds mention that the 3rd movie will be “completely different”. We can only speculate what is in store for our beloved Regenerating Degenerate.

Reynolds has technically played the Deadpool character for a decade now, going back to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, it wasn’t until Deadpool’s solo movie in 2016 that Reynolds really got to put his personal flair on the foul-mouthed, fast-healing, anti-hero. He’s since reprised the role in 2018’s Deadpool 2 and last month’s “Once Upon a Deadpool” which is a PG-13 recut of the Deadpool sequel with bonus footage.

Despite their critical and box office success, the Deadpool movies are now facing an uncertain future. Disney is in the process of acquiring Fox – the studio behind all the X-Men films to date. Disney plans to fold properties like Deadpool into the MCUonce the deal is finalized. That leaves Deadpool 3 and the planned X-Force spinoff in an odd position. With Disney holding the reigns there is a real possibly that neither film will happen and the franchise itself will undergo a total reboot. Regardless, Reynolds is already preparing for some big changes regarding the Deadpool franchise.

Reynolds, while speaking to the movie magazine – Variety, affirms Deadpool 3 is in development and “looking to go in a completely different direction”. He also adds, “Often, studios reboot or change a character… maybe like four movies too late”.

It had previously been reported that Deadpool could appear in an X-Force movie ahead of Deadpool 3. However, earlier this month, Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld revealed that X-Force had now been cancelled, due to the impending merger between Fox and Disney.

As for Deadpool 3, the film does not have a release date and it hasn’t been confirmed if director David Leitch will return. Leitch joined the production of the second movie after the exit of director Tim Miler, who naviagted the first film but left Deadpool 2 due to reported clashes with Reynolds.

As for whether Deadpool 3 will actually happen – that’s still up in the air for now. Disney CEO Bob Iger has pointed out that he’s open to making more R-rated Deadpool movies, but that doesn’t guarantee it will actually happen. There’s even a chance that our beloved Regenerating Degenerate character will be rebooted in the foreseeable future… Though that feels unlikely given Reynolds’ popularity in current role. However you slice it, moves are being made and Deadpool 3 may turn out completely different than expected – Less rating R… more PG.
