Disney revealed a first look at Emma Stone in Cruella at its D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. The Mouse House has produced several live-action remakes of its animated classics in recent years, with everything from The Lion King to the studio’s 1941 feature Dumbo getting a makeover. However, long before this current trend took off, the studio re-imagined its animated 101 Dalmatians movie as a live-action film. Released in 1996, the retelling starred Glenn Close as the iconic fur-loving villain Cruella de Vil.
The House of Mouse shared the image to Twitter. In the picture, Stone, dressed as Cruella de Vil, has three dalmatians on leashes.
Based on the villain of the 1961 classic 101 Dalmatians, plot details for Cruella have yet to be released, but Craig Gillespie is directing the movie, which is said to focus on the character’s origins. Cruella de Vil will be the second famous Disney villain to get her own spinoff, following Maleficent in Maleficent and the upcoming Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
Cruella is scheduled for release May 28, 2021. The film stars Emma Stone in the title role alongside Paul Walter Hauser and Joel Fry.
