Scott Derrickson has exited the director’s chair of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange sequel.
Per Variety, Derrickson — who helmed 2016’s Doctor Strange and signed on to do the same for Multiverse of Madness — has stepped down as director of the 2021 sequel. This report has been confirmed by Marvel Studios, which has released a statement on the matter.
“Marvel Studios and Scott Derrickson have amicably parted ways on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences,” the studio said. “We remain grateful to Scott for his contributions to the [Marvel Cinematic Universe].”
Derrickson confirmed the news in a tweet on Thursday night, saying that he is “thankful” for the collaboration with the studio.
According to Variety, the search for Derrickson’s replacement is currently underway.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen. The film hits theaters on May 7, 2021.
