Fat Thor in Avengers: Endgame

Fat Thor returns in a fan poster for Thor: Love and Thunder, and he’s got his beloved Mjolnir back too. Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder has always been a source of eye candy for the MCU, but Avengers: Endgame took him in a new direction. Following the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (as well as some leftover trauma from Thor: Ragnarok), Thor fell into a heavy depression. When audiences first saw him after Endgame‘s five-year time jump, they were surprised to see that Thor had let himself go and drowned his sorrows in beer and ice cream. The presence of Fat Thor received mixed reactions to say the very least.

Some people appreciated the depiction of Thor’s depression, as well as the message that he could still be worthy despite all he had experienced (as evidenced by his reunion with Mjolnir during the Avengers’ Time Heist). However, others took issue with the many, many jokes made at Thor’s expense. It felt like the characters (and the filmmakers as well) weren’t respecting Thor’s trauma and instead made him a walking punchline. The varying opinions have led to the question of whether Love and Thunder, Thor’s fourth solo adventure, will include the overweight version of the god.

The newest fan poster for Love and Thunder certainly keeps him around, showing him in full battle armor similar to how he appeared during Endgame. You can see the poster, as shared by graphic artist NOVA, in the space below:

Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi recently suggested Fat Thor won’t be included in the film, which might come as a relief to some. Of course, that could change as Waititi and co-screenwriter Jennifer Kaytin Robinson continue to work on the script, especially now that they have extra time following the film’s delay to 2022. Hemsworth recently said he read a draft of the script and promised it was absolutely “insane,” though he didn’t offer up any further hints.

One thing Love and Thunder should absolutely do is explore Thor’s trauma. Avengers: Infinity War delved into it a bit, and it was refreshing to actually see a superhero grapple with all the losses he’s endured. However, Endgame derailed that with the jokes aimed at Thor’s physique. Love and Thunder could provide the opportunity to get back on track when it comes to Thor’s characterization. This could still include Fat Thor, just as long as his situation is treated with compassion.
