Gamora and Star-lord in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has released a brand-new image showing the reunion between Star-Lord (Christ Pratt) and Gamora (Zoe Saldaña). The couple is two of the main characters of the Guardians franchise, which began in 2014. However, Gamora was sacrificed by her adoptive father Thanos (Josh Brolin) in order for him to collect all the Infinity Stones during the events of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Today, EW ran their 2023 summer preview on the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Included in the preview, which also featured an interview with writer-director James Gunn (who is now the co-CEO of DC Studios), was an exclusive first-look image that reveals the reunion between Star-Lord and Gamora. The two are shown standing together on the Guardians’ ship, talking while Star-Lord holds the Polaroid photo that Gamora was gazing at in the trailer for the film. How Gamora Has Returned After Her Avengers: Infinity War Death

Gamora’s Infinity War death has cast a huge shadow on the Guardians of the Galaxy, especially the formerly cheerful Star-Lord. However, she still exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some form during its current timeline. During the events of Avengers: Endgame, the surviving Avengers pulled off a time heist, stealing the Infinity Stones from various places they had been spotted in earlier movies in order to reverse Thanos’ erasure of half the universe’s population. During this time, a previous timeline’s version of Thanos traveled to the future to prevent this, bringing along Gamora (from a timeline where she hadn’t yet had her change of heart and abandoned her father).

The Guardians of the Galaxy have not had a proper solo feature since 2017’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, they made a cameo appearance in this year’s Thor: Love and Thunder during the time when Thor was working with them post-Endgame and followed that up by closing out Phase 4 of the MCU with Disney+’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Gamora didn’t appear in either of those projects, leaving fans hungry to see how her return in such a different form might affect a grieving Star-Lord.

Although there is a Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 it’s not exactly the Gamora that Star-Lord knew. While this version of the character may still be on a path to denounce Thanos, it doesn’t mean that the relationship Star-Lord had with her will be able to be resurrected, as it didn’t happen with this iteration of her. The death of her father in Avengers: Endgame may have also set her on a path to further embrace villainy, perhaps even teaming up with the film’s new antagonist Adam Warlock (Will Poulter).
