Sony has released a trailer for 2020’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard and more join the Ghostbusters family in the teaser, which hints at the film’s plot, without giving too much story away (aside from Wolfhard apparently playing Egon’s grandson). What is clear is that the film, which takes place in the same universe as the original movies rather than the reality introduced by the ill-received reboot in 2015, follows in its predecessors’ footsteps, merging humor, action and the supernatural.
With its emphasis on legacy and the past (right down to Rudd’s character, Trevor and Phoebe’s summer teacher, showing them news footage of the 1984 Ghostbusters‘ ending), the Afterlife marketing is already banking heavily on audiences’ nostalgia for this franchise to sell the latest installment. The approach makes sense, though, as Feig’s reboot arguably struggled financially because of its lack of connection to the previous entries in the property.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman, who also co-wrote the film with Gil Kenan. Starring Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd and Mckenna Grace, the film arrives in theaters July 10, 2020.
