The G.I. Joe spinoff movie Snake Eyes has found the character’s trainer, with Iko Uwais cast as Hard Master. Uwais made a name for himself after appearing in popular action movies The Raid and The Raid 2.

The spinoff will feature Crazy Rich Asians star Henry Golding as the titular hero Snake Eyes, a consistent fan favorite since Hasbro and Marvel relaunched the G.I. Joe toy line during the 1980s. Andre Koji will portray the movie’s villain Storm Shadow, a character who was once Snake Eyes sworn blood brother, now turned bitter enemy. If signed, Uwais’ character, Hard Master, is the sword-master who taught both Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow everything they know. Despite their training together, Snake Eyes eventually brought his talents to the Joes, while Storm Shadow aligned himself with a terrorist organization.

Uwais easily fits the bill of an expert fighter who can train Snake Eyes, as he has built his entire acting career around his combat skills. He is best known for The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2, but he’s also broken through to American films through Stuber, Mile 22, or his cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Most recently, Uwais led Netflix’s mystical kung fu series Wu Assassins, which further highlighted his action-star ability.

G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes is written by Evan Spiliotopoulos (Charlie’s Angels, Beauty and the Beast, The Huntsman: Winter’s War). The story will allegedly follow Snake Eyes as he seeks revenge for his father’s death by joining a ninja clan.
