Marvel fan art imagines Giancarlo Esposito as the X-Men character Magneto summoning Mjolnir. Magneto is one of Marvel comics most powerful mutants and has been portrayed as both a villain and antihero. The character is also an important fixture in X-Men TV shows and movies, most notably in Fox’s film series. Both Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender have played Magneto, with Fassbender starring as the younger version and McKellen the older. Magneto most recently appeared in 2019’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix, though that film was a critical and commercial failure.
As of now, both Magneto and the X-Men are in a state of limbo, thanks to Disney’s acquisition of Fox. No definitive announcements about future X-Men movies have been made, though it seems inevitable the characters will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point. Some actors from the original series have even expressed interest in reprising their roles for the MCU, including Famke Janssen, who played Jean Grey before Sophie Turner took on the role. However, fans shouldn’t expect to see some characters, such as Wolverine, anytime soon, as many, including Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo, have expressed concern that Hugh Jackman’s stellar performance as Wolverine is still too recent for a new actor to take on the part.
Despite the lack of current plans to introduce the X-Men into the MCU, fans continue to imagine what it would look like when they do appear. In fan art by ApexForm, The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito becomes Magneto, with the image even showing him manipulate Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Check out the art below:
As the artist mentions in their caption, Esposito was also recently imagined as another X-Men character, Professor X. Considering the actor’s impressive resume, it stands to reason he could play either character well in the MCU. He’s also recently proven himself adept at playing a more villainous character, starring as Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian. It’s worth noting that at least one person involved with the original X-Men movies, writer Zack Stentz, has suggested Esposito for Magneto in the MCU. However, Marvel will first have to decide if they want to hang on to any actors from the original X-Men films or instead cast from scratch.
The inclusion of Thor’s hammer in the fan image is meaningful, as it serves as a reminder of Magneto’s impressive powers. There’s been much debate over whether the character’s ability to control metal would allow him to wield Mjolnir. However, many think Magneto would be able to manipulate or control the hammer in some way, but wouldn’t actually be able to wield it, since he isn’t worthy. Regardless, though, it makes for a neat addition to ApexForm’s Magneto image.
