James Gunn shares a funny photo of John Cena getting coffee in his Peacemaker costume. One of Gunn’s early breakthroughs in his career came from writing the script for a Dawn of the Dead reboot based on George A. Romero’s 1978 classic, which became Zack Snyder’s directorial debut. Gunn went on to helm the first two installments of Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel and now has a third on the way. For his highly anticipated next project, Gunn will shift from Marvel to DC for a soft reboot of David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad.
Like its predecessor, Gunn’s Suicide Squad follows a collection of nutty cons who team up to form Task Force X. A few members of Ayer’s old squad are returning, such as Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney). Since The Suicide Squad will feature a standalone story with no direct connection to the 2016 film, Gunn’s follow-up will also introduce a host of new anti-heroes, such as Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, Sylvester Stallone’s King Shark, and Michael Rooker’s Savant, but the most prominent is John Cena’s Peacemaker, who has already received his own solo series on HBO Max.
James Gunn recently took to Twitter to share a funny photo of John Cena getting a cup of coffee in his Peacemaker costume. Funnily enough, this is not the first time Cena has been seen off-set in full Peacemaker apparel, which seems to have become a peculiar habit for the star. Past instances include Cena napping in the suit and wearing the Peacemaker costume in various interviews unrelated to the show. Gunn captioned the most recent photo, “What’s weird is that this is on John’s day off,” to which Cena responded, “Why is that weird? Just breaking in the uniform.” Check out the photo below:
Other than being a funny back and forth between director and star, the photo actually provides a great look at Cena’s Peacemaker costume. It consists of a tight red and blue shirt, tan pants, a holster, and futuristic-looking black boots. On his chest is a yellow panel displaying a dove, which symbolizes the character’s pacifistic quest for peace, although he is not afraid to paradoxically use violence to achieve it. Cena has described the character as a “douchey Captain America.”
As a former WWE champion and star of action movies like Bumblebee and the upcoming Fast and Furious 9, Cena undoubtedly packs the star power to make Peacemaker an instant hit. Whether Cena’s refusal to take off his Peacemaker costume is purely for comedy or an indication he is completely committed to the role, Cena certainly possesses the comedic chops and antagonistic edge required to portray Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad and the subsequent Peacemaker series on HBO Max.
