The cast of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad continues to grow with the the addition of Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi.
Taika Waititi is best known to comic book movie fans for directing Thor: Ragnarok and playing Korg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His acting credits also include What We Do in the Shadows, Hunt for the Wilderpeople and the upcoming Jojo Rabbit. After The Suicide Squad, Taika Waititi is expected to move on to his next directorial effort Next Goal Wins before beginning work on Thor: Love and Thunder.
In recent weeks, Gunn’s Suicide Squad has welcomed several new cast members, including Nathan Fillion, Storm Reid, Idris Elba, and several more. Now, Deadline reports that actor and filmmaker Taika Waititi is set to join this new Squad line-up, although his role is being kept under wraps for now. A table read for the film is expected to take place on September 11, with production commencing on September 23, according to the same report. This echoes previous reports of the production’s timeframe.
The first Suicide Squad followed a team of supervillains who were recruited by the government for a dangerous black ops mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The ensemble cast included Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Jared Leto as The Joker. It earned mixed reviews at best, but became a massive hit for Warner Bros. with a worldwide gross of $746.8 million.
