Joaquin Phoenix pays homage to Heath Ledger in new Joker footage. With just three weeks to go until Joker arrives in cinemas, a new international TV spot has arrived online for the acclaimed origin story featuring Joaquin Phoenix’s iconic DC villain which offers a look at a few snippets of new footage.

Fans of the Joker are left to wonder whether Phoenix’s portrayal of the famed DC villain will measure up to the likes of past Jokers such as Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger. One thing that is certain about Joker, however, is that Ledger’s Oscar-winning take on the character will never be forgotten and some new footage from Beast Brothers YouTube channel proves as much. A distinct homage to Ledger’s Joker as he rides in a police car can be seen in Joker, with Phoenix in a similar, though obviously not identical situation. You can check out the entire video aboe, with the homage coming at the 20-second mark.

Joker centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. The film arrives in theaters Oct. 4.
