A Joker sequel reuniting star Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips is happening.
The idea of a Joaquin Phoenix-led Joker sequel has been floating around ever since the film was released to critical acclaim. While doing press rounds for the film, both Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips flirted with the idea of returning for a Joker sequel, but the director revealed that he’d only do it if it had the same thematic resonance as the first film. After Joker crossed a billion dollars, the film almost guaranteed a sequel was going to happen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Todd Phillips is currently talking with Warner Bros. about returning for a sequel to Joker. He and Scott Silver, with whom he worked on the original, are said to be writing the sequel, which will presumably see Joaquin Phoenix returning to star due to options in his contract. Warner Bros. did not comment on the report.
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. The film is now in theaters.
