No, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will not feature a cameo appearance by Jared Leto’s Joker.

During a recent interview with Variety, Margot Robbie revealed that Jared Leto’s take on the Joker doesn’t make an appearance in the upcoming Birds of Prey movie. Here’s what’s mentioned about Jared Leto’s Joker in the Variety piece:

“The movie, as its subtitle implies, starts after Harley’s breakup with the Joker. Robbie confirms that Leto’s incarnation of the character doesn’t appear, not even as a cameo.”

That makes sense, since producer Sue Kroll recently revealed Birds of Prey isn’t connected to The Suicide Squad, even though that is where Robbie’s Harley Quinn made her DC Extended Universe debut. “It’s a standalone movie, it’s not connected to Suicide Squad. It’s not a sequel, it’s not a continuation of that story. So it has nothing to do with her break out of prison,” Kroll said at the time.

What’s more, Robbie — who had a big hand in crafting Birds of Prey‘s story — was never into the Joker/Harley romance in the first place. “I said this when publicizing Suicide Squad, the first film, her relationship with Joker always did confuse me the most,” she admitted. “That was the thing that took me the longest to get my head around.”

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) stars Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ewan McGregor, Steven Williams, Derek Wilson, Dana Lee, Francois Chau, Charlene Amoia, Chris Messina and Matthew Willig. The film is scheduled for release on Feb. 7.
