The Joker movie has received a ringing endorsement from an actor who may be more familiar with the source material than anyone else: Mark Hamill– who famously voiced the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series –.
“The [Joker movie] opens today,” Hamill wrote on Twitter. “The awesome Joaquin Phoenix, [director] Todd Phillips and [co-writer] Scott Silver brilliantly reimagine the character as never seen before! Two thumbs up from that old-school, comic book version… me.”
The actor who has played the Joker the most is Hamill, who has regularly voiced the character in animated projects and video games since 1992. Hamill most recently voiced the Joker in an episode of Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? which was broadcast only last month. There are many who consider Hamill to be the definitive version of Joker, especially following the mixed reaction to Jared Leto’s version of the character in Suicide Squad (though Hamill also praised Leto’s interpretation of the Joker in the past.)
Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais and Shea Whigham. The film is in theaters now.
