A new promo image from Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 movie Eternals reveals the superheroes’ final costumes. When Marvel announced the Phase 4 slate last summer, it was revealed that Eternals would be arriving in theaters in November 2020. The movie’s original release date just passed, but it is not yet out due to the coronavirus pandemic. With Eternals now not slated to be released until November 2021, Marvel has left fans interested in the next superteam without much news.
Chloé Zhao’s first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie wrapped filming before COVID-19 hit. There was an expectation that the first trailer was just a few weeks away to coincide with Black Widow‘s original release, that’s all changed. The Eternals trailer hasn’t been released, and Marvel has yet to show fans much of the movie. Some footage has been shown at conventions, but it wasn’t released online. Meanwhile, Marvel did share concept art of the stacked cast in costume at D23. That is so far the only official look at Eternals that Marvel has released.
Since Eternals was initially scheduled to be out by now, all of the film’s promotional materials should be done and just waiting to be released. One such item is a Marvel sticker pack that has recently provided some fresh looks at Eternals. Another image from the book has surfaced online, courtesy of BRMarvelNews, and it’s possibly the best look yet at the film. The art features Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), Sprite (Lia McHugh), Gilgamesh (Don Lee), Thena (Angelina Jolie), Sersi (Gemma Chan), Ikaris (Richard Madden), Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry), Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Ajak (Salma Hayek) in new costume designs. Although not confirmed, these costume designs are presumably the official and final suit designs seen in Eternals.
With this latest look at Eternals coming from a piece of promotional materials, it wouldn’t make sense for Marvel to okay the picture if the designs aren’t final. That said, there’s always a chance the costumes evolve throughout Eternals since it spans 7,000 years. There are several changes from the concept art Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige debuted at D23. Most of the costumes overall have more details and brighter colors in the designs, and they look more like armor than in the past. Some notable differences include the headpiece for Ajak and Makkari’s suit becoming predominantly red (as it is in the comics). The characters still might not look exactly as they did when Jack Kirby created them, but it is closer.
Now that another piece of promo art for Eternals has surfaced, hopefully, it won’t be too long before Marvel Studios releases an official look at the film and the incredible cast. If they follow their usual marketing strategy, the first look at Eternals likely won’t come until summer 2021. But, with the unprecedented nature of its delay and the mysterious nature of the source material, it might be better for Marvel to give Eternals a more significant and longer promotional push. They indeed have plenty of images and a teaser trailer ready to go; now, we’ll have to wait and see how long before any of it is released.
