Warner Bros. has officially scheduled a 2021 release date for its as-yet untitled The Matrix 4.
Today, WB announced The Matrix 4 will hit theaters on May 21, 2021. The studio had been holding onto that date for Taika Waititi’s live-action Akira adaptation, but with the project on indefinite hold for the time being (while Waititi goes off to direct Thor: Love & Thunder first), they’ve decided to hand its spot over to the new Matrix sequel instead. It’s also the same day Keanu Reeves is set to make his return as the “Baba Yaga” in Lionsgate’s John Wick 4, as it happens.

The new film is set to start filming sometime in 2020 and will feature not only the return of Lana Wachowski but also Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss. WB Chairman Toby Emmerich couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome the franchise and Wachowski back into the fold.
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering the Matrix with Lana,” Emmerich said. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”
