A rumor is going around that J.K. Simmons would be reprising the role of the Daily Bugle’s J. Jonah Jameson for the upcoming Morbius film.
According to DR Movie News, citing an unnamed source who has seen actual footage, actor J.K. Simmons will appear in Morbius, reprising his role as Daily Bugle editor-in-chief J. Jonah Jameson. Freelance media journalist Daniel Richtman seemed to confirm that footage of Simmons as J.J did exist for the upcoming Sony film, though no descriptions were provided.
Should Simmons reprise his role as Jameson in Morbius, it’d really be surprising on multiple fronts. At face value, it’d show the actor has a long-term plan in place with the character with a multi-picture contract under his belt. Then, on top of that, it’d raise questions as the character’s last appearance came in Far From Home, a movie most certainly set in Marvel Studios’ MCU. Because of that, it’s expected Sony would have to get approval to use Jameson in Morbius, since it’s technically not part of the MCU — at least as of yet.
J.K Simmons become a fan-favorite through his portrayal of J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. He last appeared in Spider-Man: Far From Home, satisfying a long-standing desire from fans to see Simmons back in the role, although the MCU’s adaptation of the comic book character is the host of an online news outlet rather than the editor-in-chief of a newspaper.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius stars Jared Leto as the titular character, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Adria Arjona as Martine Bancroft, Tyrese Gibson as Agent Stroud and Jared Harris in an undisclosed role. The film is set to be released July 31, 2020.
