The upcoming Mortal Kombat movie reboot casts its Shang Tsung and Scorpion actors, and the choices should prove quite popular with franchise fans.

Variety reports The Dark Knight star Chin Han will play Shang Tsung, while Avengers: Endgame alum Hiroyuki Sanada fills the role of Scorpion. They join a cast that already includes Joe Taslim (Sub Zero), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Tadanobu Asano (Raiden), Mehcad Brooks (Jackson “Jax” Bridges), Sisi Stringer (Mileena) and Lewis Tan, whose role has not yet been announced.

On the surface, both men appear to be cast quite well, especially Sanada, who’s been a popular fan choice to play Scorpion for many months. Han’s knack for playing well-spoken, smarmy jerks with a touch of class should also make him a great Shang Tsung. Chin Han, of course, played scheming banker Lau in The Dark Knight, and also played wealthy villain Frank Chen on Arrow, although he’s since portrayed nobler characters in Independence Day: Resurgence and Skyscraper.

The Mortal Kombat series is one of the most popular and long-running franchises in video game history. First debuting in 1992, the original game has gone on to spawn numerous sequels, as well as movie, comic book and television tie-ins. A Mortal Kombat film directed by Paul W.S. Anderson was released back in 1995, followed soon-after by Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997.

The newest Mortal Kombat movie reboot is produced by James Wan through New Line Cinema from a screenplay written by Greg Russo, and marks the feature directorial debut of Simon McQuoid. The film is currently slated to land in Earthrealm on March 5, 2021.
