Reportedly, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have come to an agreement regarding the commencement of production for the much-anticipated Spider-Man 4.

According to information from an insider, Daniel Richtman (via X), the fourth installment of the Spider-Man series set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring Tom Holland in the lead role, is aiming for a late 2024 start of production. Jon Watts is expected to return as the director, and Zendaya is also reportedly set to reprise her role as MJ. The development of Spider-Man 4 was initially announced in December 2021, and in November 2022, Tom Holland sealed a deal to reprise his role as the beloved Wall-Crawler. This upcoming sequel will mark his seventh appearance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man since his debut in the 2016 film, “Captain America: Civil War.”

While specific plot details for Spider-Man 4 are being kept tightly under wraps, rumors have been circulating suggesting that the film will explore the aftermath of the Disney+ series, “Daredevil: Born Again.” This series features the return of Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin and Charlie Cox as Daredevil. Charlie Cox’s Daredevil had previously crossed paths with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in their civilian identities of Matt Murdock and Peter Parker in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” This film, a favorite among MCU fans, concluded with Doctor Strange erasing everyone’s memories of Peter Parker to protect the multiverse. In the final moments of the movie, Peter is seen resuming his vigilantism, donning a new suit that closely resembles the one from the comics.

Expanding the Spider-Man Universe

In addition to “Spider-Man 4,” Sony is pushing forward with its Spider-Man Universe (SSU), primarily featuring standalone films centered around Spider-Man villains, such as Venom and Kraven the Hunter. The latter film, with Taylor-Johnson in the lead role as the titular Spider-Man adversary, was recently rescheduled from October 2024 to late 2024. Other projects in the SSU lineup include “Madame Web,” a third Venom film, and two live-action series for Prime Video: “Silk: Spider Society” and an untitled “Spider-Man Noir” series. “El Muerto,” starring Bad Bunny as the masked wrestler, was also in development at Sony, but it appears to have been shelved after Bad Bunny’s departure in September 2023.

Could Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Receive a Fourth Film?

While fans are eagerly anticipating another solo adventure for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, there is also hope among fans that Sony and Marvel may collaborate on a fourth Spider-Man film led by Tobey Maguire. Sony initially explored the possibility of a fourth Spider-Man film with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire between 2007 and 2010.

Thomas Haden Church, who portrayed Flint Marko/Sandman in “Spider-Man 3” and “No Way Home,” recently shared that he had heard rumors about Sam Raimi potentially directing another Spider-Man film with Tobey Maguire. He expressed interest in campaigning for at least a cameo appearance in the potential sequel. However, despite Tobey Maguire’s recent statement that “No Way Home” rekindled his interest in acting, there has been no official announcement regarding a fourth Maguire-led Spider-Man film at this time.
