Jeff Goldblum has seemingly confirmed that Robert Downey Jr will voice Iron Man in Marvel’s animated series What If…? for Disney Plus.
Goldblum let the news slip during an episode of BuzzFeed Celeb (via Newsarama). He revealed that the episode in question will feature several characters from Thor: Ragnarok appearing alongside Downey’s Tony Stark, including his own villain The Grandmaster and Taika Waititi’s Korg (with Waititi apparently already having recorded his new lines).
“I went to the Disney studios and I recorded the Grandmaster’s voice for an episode of a show that’s gonna be on Disney Plus that’s called What If…?; it’s an animated version of all the characters we know and love from Marvel and this episode included the Grandmaster and Iron Man, so [Robert Downey Jr] will do a voice for that, and Korg. Taika Waititi had already recorded his voice for that, so yeah, for a couple hours I enjoyed doing that.”

Based on the cast list that Jeff Goldblum mentioned for the episode featuring himself, Robert Downey Jr, and Taika Waititi, it seems likely that this particular story will involve a scenario in which Iron Man is stuck on Sakaar. Perhaps the “What If?” scenario given is set at the end of 2012’s The Avengers, showing what would have happened if Iron Man didn’t make it back through the portal back to Earth and instead somehow ended up on Sakaar. Even still, don’t expect Robert Downey Jr to play Iron Man outside of What If…? anytime soon, as they don’t want to undermine the impact of Avengers: Endgame‘s ending.
We got a closer look at Marvel’s What If…? thanks to Expanding the Universe, a new special on Disney+ that features concept art from the upcoming Marvel series. The special also showcased concept art for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Marvel’s Hawkeye, giving viewers a good look at what the costumes for characters like U.S. Agent and Kate Bishop will look like.
Stay tuned for more updates on Robert Downey Jr, What If…?, and Iron Man.
