A fan-made poster turns Spider-Man (Tom Holland) into Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in a scenario that would fit within Marvel’s What If…? series. Officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, What If…? is an animated series headed for Disney+ next year that depicts a series of alternate storylines within the MCU, all told by Uatu the Watcher (Jeffrey Wright). It’s based on a comics run that explored the same kinds of stories, and the first episode is said to examine what would have happened if Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) took the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). Several actors from the MCU will be back to reprise their characters in voice roles.
Spider-Man and Doctor Strange first crossed paths in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, when the two joined forces alongside other heroes to take on Thanos (Josh Brolin). Their stories will continue on into Phase Four, with Doctor Strange next appearing in his second solo film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Spidey’s MCU future hit some speed bumps last year, but he’ll return for a third solo film in July 2021. Holland and Cumberbatch weren’t included in the initial cast list for What If…?, but that hasn’t stopped fans from imagining potential storylines for them.
A poster made by Cvailet_art (via Reddit) reimagines Spider-Man as the Sorcerer Supreme, complete with his trademark cloak and the Eye of Agamotto. Spider-Man is still donning his own supersuit, but he’s definitely got some new abilities up his sleeve. Check it out below:
Fans are excited for What If…? because of the interesting scenarios it will pose, and Spider-Man with Doctor Strange’s powers would be a pretty thrilling story. Watching the two characters play off each other in Infinity War made for some dynamic fight scenes, and there’s a hope that they will cross paths again in the future. Since Spider-Man and Doctor Strange will be sticking around in the MCU for a bit longer, it’s possible that they will.
Other scenarios What If…? will explore is Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) becoming Star Lord instead of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and a zombie Captain America coming to life. Getting the chance to see differing routes within the MCU will be a fun change for fans, and since it’s animated, there’s an opportunity for some really interesting visuals. Much of the episodes are still a mystery, but fans have enjoyed predicting what What If…? will cover. It’s just a shame it probably won’t include Spider-Man with Doctor Strange’s abilities, because that would be wild.
