Spider-Man: Far From Home is the latest movie to get the deepfake treatment, with one fan swapping Tom Holland out for original Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire in a new video.
Youtuber Aldo Jones shared the video with Maguire replacing Holland as Spider-Man online yesterday. At first glance, the video appears to be nothing more than the Far From Home trailer that debuted shortly after the theatrical release of Avengers: Endgame. Upon closer look, though, you can clearly see Maguire’s features superimposed onto Holland’s face.
Jones’ trailer comes as Spider-Man’s future in the MCU is uncertain. Though Sony has the rights to the character, the studio reached a landmark deal with Marvel several years ago to lend him out. This allowed Spider-Man to appear in Marvel films, with Sony holding onto distribution rights for his standalone movies. However, as was revealed earlier this month, the two studios are having trouble reaching an agreement to extend the deal. This means that although Holland will continue playing Spider-Man for the time being, he may not appear in any more MCU films.
Now in theaters, director Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Samuel L. Jackson, Zendaya, Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau, JB Smoove, Jacob Batalon and Martin Starr, with Marisa Tomei and Jake Gyllenhaal.
