A Marvel What If…? fan poster reveals an unexpected mashup of Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Iron Man. The three heroes are all key members of the Avengers team and helped defeat Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. With so many powers, suits, and characters in play in the MCU, it’s no wonder fans sometimes question what would happen if things were different. Marvel’s upcoming animated series on Disney+, What If…?, will consider that very idea, offering twists on classic Marvel stories. What’s more, it will explore all 23 MCU movies, offering something for all fans.
One of the most exciting What If…? premises involves Peggy Carter, with the show’s first episode depicting the agent becoming Captain America instead of Steve Rogers. The show is based on the What If comics, which debuted in the 1970s. It will feature dozens of actors from the MCU reprising their roles. However, it will also introduce a character new to the MCU: Uatu/The Watcher. He will be voiced by Jeffrey Wright and serve as the series’ narrator. What If…? is set to premiere in 2021, with a 10-episode first season. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed last year that season 2 is already in the works and will feature 10 episodes like the first.
Considering the endless possible What If…? scenarios, fans have inevitable started wondering which may be featured on the show. In recent fan art, artist Camille Vialet explored one possible situation, with Spider-Man becoming Doctor Strange and Doctor Strange becoming Iron Man. Vialet’s art is interesting, especially because Spider-Man wears his usual suit while adding Doctor Strange’s cape, powers, and Eye of Agamotto. Check out Vialet’s work below:
Vialet previously explored the Spider-Strange concept, but it’s interesting to see Doctor Iron Man added to the mix. There is precedent for that scenario in the MCU, as BTS images and concept art from Avengers: Infinity War show Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch wearing Iron Man’s armor. Luckily, the What If…? series is going forward as planned, despite the current pandemic. The show’s head of animation, Stephan Franck, recently revealed work is continuing remotely, which hopefully means the series won’t be delayed. Unlike the film side of the MCU, Disney+ hasn’t delayed any of its Marvel shows yet because of COVID, though some have halted production.
Vialet’s art is a fun exploration of a What If…? scenario. As of now, fans don’t know too much about which alternate storylines may be featured on the show. Vialet admits in her caption the likelihood of either Spider-Strange or Doctor Iron Man appearing onscreen is low. However, it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Though the image is great, it would be even more interesting to see it play out onscreen.
