New fan art for The Batman envisions Firefly as the movie’s central villain. The Batman is Matt Reeves’ darker, grittier take on the iconic DC hero. The movie will star Robert Pattinson in the titular role and feature several of Batman allies, including Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) and Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis). The Batman will follow a relatively inexperienced Dark Knight, as the movie focuses on Bruce Wayne in his second year as Batman.
Although much remains unknown about The Batman’s central plot, the Riddler (Paul Dano) will act as the movie’s main villain. The Batman trailer shows that the Riddler has not only killed Gotham’s mayor, but leaves clues for Batman to follow. In addition, analysis of trailer dialogue hints that the Riddler may know that Batman is secretly Bruce Wayne. As such, the Wayne family history may become one piece of the Riddler’s intricate plan.
Digital artist bosslogic suggests that Firefly could replace the Riddler as The Batman’s main antagonist. Bosslogic puts Firefly in what looks to be protective fire armor. Judging by the chest protector, the costume appears to be partially constructed out of Gotham City Fire Department equipment as well. Fans can check out the artist’s depiction of Firefly below:
While Firefly may not be as well known as some of Batman’s other rogues, he’s still proven to be a formidable foe. Although Firefly’s origin story differs throughout the comics, he’s most commonly shown as an obsessive pyromaniac. He becomes terribly scarred after setting fire to a chemical factory, and later starts working as a mercenary and arsonist. That being said, Firefly has appeared in numerous Batman-related projects, from The Batman animated series to Batman: Arkham video games. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem likely that Firefly will be The Batman’s main villain. However, it would still be cool to see Firefly in the spotlight, especially for a future Dark Knight blockbuster.
While The Batman won’t be released until 2022, there has already been immense hype about what’s to come. For instance, set photos have shown that Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) and Batman have a cool motorcycle scene together and that the production team is hard at work making Chicago look like Gotham. While The Batman has been plagued with numerous delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems things are finally back on track. To that end, while Firefly may not appear as the film’s main antagonist, there’s still plenty that Batman fans have to look forward to.
