The Batman director Matt Reeves has officially confirmed that Andy Serkis will portray Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming film.
Reeves announced the news on Twitter with a GIF of Serkis high-fiving fans on a red carpet. “And here comes Alfred!” he wrote, with a bat emoji for added measure. The confirmation follows last week’s report that Serkis was in talks for the role.
Known primarily for his work as perhaps the most accomplished motion-capture actor in the industry, Andy Serkis is now the latest actor to be part of both the Marvel Universe and the DC Universe. Now that he’s signed on as Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s loyal and wise butler, we will get a chance to see him in another role that doesn’t require digital makeup but rather his own likeness and impeccable skills as an actor.
Serkis joins a cast that includes Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravtiz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as the Riddler. He will play the devoted butler of Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne.
Starring Robert Pattinson, The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves, who will also produce alongside Dylan Clark. While casting is still underway, the film is scheduled to be released on June 25, 2021.
