Javier Bardem is currently in talks to play King Triton in Disney’s upcoming live-action retelling of The Little Mermaid

According to Deadline, the Oscar-winning Bardem is now in negotiations to play Ariel’s father and the ruler under the sea, King Triton. The DisInsider actually reported this news earlier today but was unable to confirm it at the time.

In addition to possibly joining The Littler Mermaid, Bardem can be seen next in the star-studded cast of Dune, which is being helmed by Denis Villeneuve, the director of Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. Bardem will be acting alongside big names such as Rebecca Ferguson, Jason Momoa, Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Oscar Isaac, and Stellan Skarsgård.

King Triton is the father of Ariel in the original Disney version of The Little Mermaid. The character plays a critical role in the film, grooming Ariel (Halle Bailey) for life under the sea while she longs to walk on the surface among humans and, of course, one very handsome prince.

The Little Mermaid currently has no release date.
