To celebrate the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse on Digital HD, Sony Animation Pictures has released the first 9 minutes of the movie online.

Available to stream on Sony Pictures Entertainment’s official YouTube channel, the opening to the film shows a typical Brooklyn morning in the life of protagonist Miles Morales.

The opening of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is narrated by the Peter Parker from Miles Morales’ universe, who is voiced by Chris Pine. His introductory montage features amusing nods to previous Spider-Man movies, and acknowledges the massive scope of the Spider-Man franchise – from comic cooks to cereals to a Christmas album. After this opening, however, the movie shifts to focus on Miles Morales, a character who will be unfamiliar to fans who have only seen the movies rather than reading the comics. As such, Miles’ origin story is told in full rather than in shorthand.

Towards the end of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse‘s first nine minutes we’re also introduced to a third spider-person, Gwen Stacy a.k.a. Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), who is one of the visitors to Miles’ world from another dimension. Gwen is not only set to return in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, she’s also expected to be the lead character in an all-female spinoff that’s currently in development.

Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore, Brian Tyree Henry, Jake Johnson, Mahershala Ali, Hailee Steinfeld, Liev Schreiber, Luna Lauren Velez, Lily Tomlin, Nicolas Cage, John Mulaney and Kimiko Glenn. The film is available now on digital HD and March 19 on Blu-ray, UltraHD, 4K and DVD.
