The second trailer for the upcoming X-Men film Dark Phoenix has been released.
Dark Phoenix is both a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse and a film adaptation of Chris Claremont’s classic comic series, The Dark Phoenix Saga. Of course, Fox previously adapted the story back in 2006 with X-Men: The Last Stand, a movie that reduced Jean Grey’s transformation into Phoenix to a subplot in a larger narrative about a mutant cure (itself, inspired by Joss Whedon’s run on Astonishing X-Men). Writer/producer Simon Kinberg has long expressed his frustration about how The Last Stand turned out and will now get a chance to redeem himself with Dark Phoenix, which he’s both writing and directing. As such, fans have been eagerly awaiting more footage to see how the Phoenix Saga turns out, this second time around.
The trailer, which was unveiled during Jessica Chastain’s guest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, offers a few more clues about what exactly fans can expect from director Simon Kinberg’s second stab at adapting Marvel’s “Dark Phoenix Saga” for the big screen.
Though the footage is short, fans get to witness the Phoenix Force chose Jean Grey as its new host, with the cosmic power surging into her body. “You will possess the very power of a god,” Chastain says. The biggest scene takes place between Jean, Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender), with Jean using her newfound abilities to freeze Magneto in place while she crushes his skull inside his helmet.
Written and directed by X-franchise veteran Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenixstars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters and Jessica Chastain. The film is scheduled to be released on June 7.
