The full-length trailer for Rocketman has arrived.
Kingsman franchise star Taron Egerton portrays Elton John in the film, which will follow the rise of the singer’s prolific music career, beginning with his his time at the Royal Academy of Music.
The full-length trailer, which dropped Thursday morning, opens with Elton playing the piano while singing the first few words from “Your Song.” He tells his friend and lyricist, Taupin, “I can hear the whole tune in my head. It was all there, I just had to get it out.”
The clip then flashes to moments showcasing Elton’s rise to fame, including changing his name from Reginald Dwight to Elton. “So how does a fat boy from nowhere, get to be a song man?” someone asks him. We also see Egerton’s take on Elton’s wild, over-the-top, yet absolutely incredible fashion choices.
The movie is also unique is the sense that Egerton does his own singing, as opposed to being dubbed by the real Elton John’s vocals. Previously-released clips have offered a sneak peek of the actor leaving his mark on iconic tunes like “Tiny Dancer” and, of course, “Rocketman” in the film, as does the full-length trailer. This isn’t the first time Egerton’s shown off his musical talents on the big screen either, having previously sung in Illumination’s animated movie Sing. Tackling Elton John songs is certainly no small task, but the actor seems to have succeeded in capturing the spirit of John’s music, while also putting a fresh spin on the sound. Here’s hoping Rocketman is equally successful in its endeavor to do justice by the singer-songwriter’s wildly unpredictable life.
