The first trailer for the J.R.R. Tolkien biopic starring Nicholas Hoult as the Lord of the Rings author has arrived. The short video gives us a first look at the film that will explore Tolkien’s formative years and the journey and experiences that inspired him to write The Lord of the Rings.
Nicholas Hoult (The Favourite) portrays Tolkien as a young adult in the film, opposite Lily Collins (The Mortal Instruments) as his lifelong love-turned wife, Edith Bratt. The movie only just got a May release date last month, followed shortly after by the first-look image of Hoult as Tolkien proper. Fox Searchlight has since taken the next step forward with its marketing by dropping an official Tolkien teaser online, ahead of its premiere in theaters in the weeks ahead.
Besides Hoult as Tolkien, the film stars Lily Collins as Tolkien’s wife Edith Bratt, Tom Glynn Carne, Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Colm Meaney, Genevieve O’Reilly, Craig Roberts, Derek Jacobi, James MacCallum, and Pam Ferris.
Dome Karukoski directs Tolkien from a screenplay by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford. Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, and Kris Thykier produce.
