Zac Efron takes on the roll as notorious serial killer Ted Bundy in the first teaser trailer for Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. This week saw the 30th anniversary of Bundy’s death by Florida’s electric chair. Netflix used the anniversary to release a four part docuseries called “Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes”. Bundy’s sudden pop culture resurgence only reaffirms America’s fascination with the minds of serial killers.
The film, which is premiering at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, will feature Efron as Ted Bundy, one of the most infamous serial killers in the United States. Bundy was responsible for the deaths and sexual assaults of more than 30 women. He was finally executed in Florida during 1989 following his trial.
Documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger, the man responsible for Netflix’s Ted Bundy Tapes docuseries, will attempt to put yet another spin on the Bundy story with his fictional film. Voltage Pictures has dropped the first teaser trailer for Berlinger’s film, featuring Efron together with co-stars Jim Parsons, Lily Collins, Kaya Scodelario, John Malkovich, and James Hetfield of the band Metallica.
In the one-and-a-half-minute trailer, viewers are shown snippets of Bundy’s arrest, court appearances, and time in prison. All while following his relationship with his girlfriend, Liz Kendall (portrayed by Lily Collins).
Efron, an actor still best-known for playing Troy Bolton in High School Musical – might seem an unlikely candidate to play a man who raped and murdered over 30 women in multiple states. However , Bundy himself had been seen as the least likely of murderers. In fact, Bundy got away with his crimes for as long as he did because he presented himself as a clean-cut, attractive, all-American man. That paradox is sure to be played up in the movie.
