Marvel Studios unveils the first Hawkeye trailer for the upcoming Disney+ show. Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Phase 1, making his debut in Thor before joining up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers. However, he’d never received a film or TV franchise of his own – until Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige enlisted Renner’s help to announce the solo Hawkeye show at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, to release as part of Phase 4. During the presentation in Hall H, Feige and Renner additionally confirmed the Hawkeye show would introduce fan-favorite comics character Kate Bishop.
In the two years since that announcement at SDCC, Hailee Steinfeld was cast as Kate Bishop, and unofficial set photos from Hawkeye showed her filming scenes with Renner. Set photos additionally confirmed the show will include another favorite from the comics, Lucky the Pizza Dog, while the casting of Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez aka. Echo indicated another Marvel hero will appear in the show. Further, though it was reported in late 2020, the Black Widow post-credits scene also confirmed the appearance of Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova in Hawkeye. Though Marvel has released bits and teases for the upcoming show, now they’ve unveiled the Hawkeye trailer.
Marvel Studios released the Hawekeye show trailer after Renner teased its debut on Instagram. The trailer confirms Hawkeye is a Christmas show, and much of the preview focuses on introducing the dynamic between Clint and Kate. The footage reveals that Kate Bishop is introduced because she’s mistaken for Clint’s second alter-ego, Ronin, who’s being targeted because of his history in Avengers: Endgame’s five year time-jump. Check out the Hawkeye trailer below.
Beyond setting up the relationship between Clint and Kate in Hawkeye, the trailer is light on teasing other aspects known to be included in the Marvel show. There’s one brief close-up shot of Cox’s Echo and another of Vera Farmiga as Kate’s mom Eleanor, but no look at Pugh’s Yelena. It’s possible Marvel will keep Yelena’s involvement in the show hidden until its release – especially if it’s minimal. Based on the Hawkeye trailer, it certainly seems Clint and Kate will have their hands full dealing with some bad guys that Clint angered while he was Ronin, though it’s still unclear how Echo and Eleanor will fit into the story of the show.
The Hawkeye trailer also offers another look at the MCU’s post-Endgame world, including Rogers: The Musical, a Hamilton style in-universe musical about Steve Rogers’ life. As The Falcon and the Winter Soldier revealed, much of the world believes Steve to be dead or, according to some theorists, on the moon, but the MCU hasn’t confirmed where exactly he is – which means there’s a chance he got to watch his own musical. A brief snippet of the musical is also shown in the Hawkeye trailer, but it’s unclear how much, if any more, will be included in the series itself. Still, it’s a fun way to build out the MCU (and it seems Rogers: The Musical is more successful than the real-world Marvel musical Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark). Along with this world-building, the Hawekeye trailer demonstrates a compelling dynamic between Clint and Kate that will ramp up excitement for the show’s release in November.
