SCREAM 2019 Trailer

The 2022 edition of Scream has released its first trailer, as familiar figures like Ghostface, Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox return to the horror franchise.

The trailer begins with the familiar Scream trope of a girl receiving an ominous call from the Ghostface killer. She’s then attacked by the masked murderer and dragged away before the trailer cuts to Dewey calling Sidney and letting her know that the killings have resumed. Sidney, Dewey and Gale attempt to help a new batch of teens (who all have connections to past Ghostface killers) navigate the deadly situation. The trailer ends with Ghostface telling Sidney that it’s an honor to meet her.

Newcomer Jack Quaid originally confirmed the release date of the Scream trailer on social media. “Good news everyone! The trailer for [Scream] comes out TOMORROW!” Quaid wrote on Instagram Oct. 10. “In the meantime here’s a FIRST LOOK at my character Richie, from [EW]. Only in theaters January 14th!”

Co-director Tyler Gillet previously revealed how 2022’s Scream was written before any of the franchise’s mainstays signed on to reprise their roles. “It was a wildly anxiety-producing situation,” Gillett said. “They were not disposable roles; they were very, very important and the heartbeat of what was great about the script. We couldn’t imagine the movie without any of them and so not having that perfectly locked-in right off the bat was definitely scary.”

Gillet is joined by his Ready or Not co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin on Scream, with James Vanderbilt (ZodiacWhite House Down) and Guy Busick (Ready or NotCastle Rock) supplying the script. This marks the first movie in the Scream franchise not to be helmed by Wes Craven, who passed away in 2015 after directing the previous four films.

“I genuinely was in two minds,” said Campbell. “The idea of making these films without Wes Craven seemed challenging to me. I loved the man very much. But Matt and Tyler wrote me a letter, speaking of their appreciation and great respect for Wes Craven, and speaking of the fact that the very reason that they are directors today was because of these movies and because of Wes, and that meant a great deal to me.”

David Arquette shared a new Scream poster starring Ghostface days before the trailer was released. “It’s Always Someone You Know,” Arquette captioned the poster. The first official images from Scream featured Campbell, Arquette and Cox with the new additions Quaid, Jenna Ortega as Tara, Melissa Barrera as Sam, Scream 4 alum Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks, Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy, Dylan Minnette as Wes, Mikey Madison as Amber, Mason Gooding as Chad, Sonia Ammar as Liv and Kyle Gallner as Vince.

Scream arrives in theaters Jan. 14, 2022.
