Season 5 of the AMC spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead will be closer linked to the flagship series The Walking Dead. At WonderCon 2019, The Walking Dead Chief Content Officer Scott Gimple hinted that a storyline originating on The Walking Dead television series would be continued on Fear the Walking Dead.

“This season, I wouldn’t classify it as an enemy, but there will be this, beyond Austin [Amelio], this very interesting commonality, this story strand that’s gonna be furthered on this show that started on The Walking Dead,” Gimple stated. “And who knows where it will go? But that’s the thing on tap right now.”

This news comes after Gimple teased a crossover is on its way at a recent appearance on the Talking Dead season finale:

Fear the Walking Dead is coming up in June, and there is a story in the first half of the season that has to do with one of these greater stories of the universe that will bring in some of the things that all of you guys have seen before, and it will expand it out just a little bit more, and then we’ll have an announcement,” Gimple said.

Considering how far The Walking Dead has come, there are many opportunities and loose ends that Fear the Walking Dead could pick up on. With the Whisperers threatening Alexandria, the mysterious kidnapping of Rick Grimes, and a voice trying to contact Alexandria on radio, Fear the Walking Dead could go into greater details of the mysteries and origins behind the events that took place in the flagship series.

Premiering June 2 at 9 PM ET/8 PM CT on AMC, Fear the Walking Dead stars Lennie James, Colman Domingo, Alexa Nisenson, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Garret Dillahunt, Jenna Elfman, Austin Amelio and Karen David.
