Stranger Things Hopper smoking

Netflix promises to decrease the amount of smoking and tobacco use depicted in their original productions, such as Stranger Things.

Anti-smoking group Truth Initiative revealed the results of a study showing how popular shows among young audiences have increasingly involved smoking. Among them were Stranger Things. Truth Initiative’s analysis revealed Season 2 of the sci-fi/horror series had a 44% increase in depictions of smoking over the first season of the show.

According to Deadline, Netflix has claimed that beginning later this year, original content with ratings of TV-14 or below will be smoking and e-cigarette free. However, exceptions will be made for historical or factual accuracy.

Series and films pertaining to older viewers will be allotted more wiggle room as Netflix stated, “There’ll be no smoking or e-cigarettes unless it’s essential to the creative vision of the artist or because it’s character-defining.” Smoking information will be attached with ratings so viewers can take necessary precautions.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Priah Ferguson, Cary Elwes, Jake Busey, and Maya Thurman-Hawke.
